Every little detail in this story was important and the author didn't use any superfluous words or story elements. The little parts of Native American mythology and belief, that were added to the story, fit perfectly to Annie, her feelings and the wilderness she stayed in. A grizzly is playing a major role in Annie's stay in the Tetons and I loved how this powerful wild animal was used to support Annie recovery.

What I especially enjoyed about "Shadow Falls" is that in the story there were no easy solutions or fast changes in people or relationships. These things take time and that's a message the author delivered in a beautiful and impressive way. It captures the mood of the book beautifully. The description of the nature in this book is beautiful and the story fascinated me through it's haunting writing style.

I would recommend this book to all readers who enjoy beautifully written stories with finesse and deep emotions.

In her Grandfathers bright Wyoming valley surrounded by the mighty Tetons, year-old Annie McGraw wanders a forest of shadows. She and her older brother, Cody, always spent the summers hereCody scaling the cliff walls with Grandpa, Annie tracking Yellowstone moose with her camera. But after the phone call, the valley, like the rest of Annies world, feels drained of color. Annie wishes the summer could pass like a night of dreamless sleepuntil a grizzly bear finds her on the riverbank.

The bear spares her life, but it has a message for her. Suddenly Annie isnt sure how she feels about anything.

Like signs in a dark forest, strangers emerge along her patha handsome guy with a dangerous smile, a little boy wise beyond his years, the man in the Teepee Tree. Even Grandpa, always so solid and distant, seems to hold secrets behind his icy blue eyes. Struggling under the weight of her grief, Annie begins to follow the signs, and to hear the grizzlys message.

From School Library JournalGrade After 12 summers with her older brother in their grandfather's remote Wyoming valley, Annie, 15, is returning alone for the first time.

Numbed by grief over Cody's death, she is blind to the beauty of the mountains that once called her to climb and take pictures. Annie is also heedless of her grandfather's grief and his attempts to reach out to her. It is the disappearance of a small boy and the presence of Great-Grandmother Grizzly that help the teen overcome her loss and open her heart to others and to the world.

The book, to some extent, focuses on mountain climbingwhich is an interesting and fairly unexplored topic in young adult literature. Unfortunately, this originality does not extend to the rest of the book. The slow-to-develop plot is dragged down by cheesy description and uninspired dialogue.

The characters are stereotypical. The appearance of the grizzly as Annie's totem has great potential, but without a deeper exploration of Native American religion, the bear is without context.

From BooklistGr. Six months after her brother Cody dies in an Andean climbing accident, Annie returns to her grandfather's cabin in Wyoming's Tetons, where the memories of summers with Cody haunt her.

Believing that her brother was the favored child, Annie harbors resentment and anger, and she blames her grandfather for teaching Cody to climb. Her grandfather's brusque ways and his own grief keep the two at odds, and her once beloved photography hobby no longer holds her interest.

The relationship between Annie and her grandfather is another major part of the story. Cody's dead brought to light what was wrong between them and in the end gave them a second chance. I enjoyed that their relationship didn't change from one second to another, this fit to their personalities and to the overall pace of the book. The description of the wilderness and especially the woods was beautiful and captivating.

I could see every little detail of the nature in my mind and even felt surrounded by it at times. In general Amy Kathleen Ryan's powerful, haunting and vibrant writing style was one of my highlights.
